I think it's a little like, you know, Popper's idea of the third world. We have relations with works of art and we carry them in our memory. If one has no emotional response, you will not remember it. Emotion is what consolidates memory. So certain theories about art formalism would be one that tried to remove emotion from the experience of art. For me, it's just utter hogwash.
