The History of the Championships

In 1978, when Carp of the first time defended his title, he had to play 32 games in order to win the sixth game over Victor Kortzner and it was 6'5". So he had significant experience with it. But this was still unprecedented because they were going up to 48th game and then it was this scandal when the game ended without a winner. And because that first match was basically out of the books, they played another one in 1985, which followed now the different format where it would be 24 games.
