After World War II, the British Empire shrank and its influence diminished. That's not because of her, right? Some people might be thinking what that's her responsibility. But Britain was not dominant in the way that it had been before. And perhaps another thing is that this, perhaps the main role of the monarch, the Queen, and now the King, is to be a human connection, a sort of human link to Britain's past. She's a symbol. Her death is symbolic too, because it's sort of punctuates this period of history.
Queen Elizabeth II died today. Here are my thoughts and feelings about the significance and symbolism of her life and death, recorded just an hour after I first saw the news.
