It's been known since the 1980s that on the hills just to the southwest of Verilamium within literally within a mile or two of it, there's a plateau where Roman battle artifacts have been discovered. Now relatively early Roman battle artifacts probably first century AD so the right time period we're looking for they consist almost entirely of lead slingshots. The sling was a deadly weapon. It had a range of 200 plus meters and velocity of a slingshot when it was first loosed was not far off a 44 magnum revolver.
