Renewables don't solve the problem for us because solar only works when the sun is shining and the wind only blows certain times so then in order to tide over our energy consumption we either have to invest in battery or storage technology. We need fast spin up gas fired car fossil fuel which is what today backs up the backing power because it can come online very quickly. It's unfortunate that those natural gas plants are relatively high emission compared to the base load power that would have otherwise been used really.
