The Politics of Language in the British Empire
The book looks at the discourse of disability and 19th century debate about what constitutes human kin. Deafness features a point of particular interest in the book for two reasons: I've got some deaf cousins who introduced me to ideas about deaf politics, which is also coming from the sources. The chapter uses the notion of language and civilization as a lens through which to think about sub questions about how disabled people were understood in the context of the British Empire.
