Hip hop culture emerges from that deep seated engagement with traditions. What jazz did for modernism is what hip hop is doing for contemporary art, but on a much more saturated and global scale. And I find absolutely genius about the system of making that hip hop has created: It's constantly about disrupting power and subversion.
