Nick Gillespie: There is this competition between Western discourses about what sovereignty means in terms of creating a nation's state and things along those lines. He says China has begun to co-op those narratives as they become more imperial. The way we think about Tibet is through discourses woven by one of two things, either Western notions of statehood or a Chinese mythos weaving within their ordering of history to rationalize their present," he says.
