The Protest for the Launch of Apollo 11
By 1965, public opinion polls consistently showed that the majority of Americans opposed the budget for Apollo. Conservatives like Goldwater wanted to end the race to the moon because they wanted to slash government spending. Liberals, especially black liberals, opposed Apollo because they wantedto shift government spending. In 1970, Nixon announced that NASA's fate would be evaluated like any other domestic agency and space exploration were important.
