R is now at equal footing as a choice in this set of options alongside the languages you often hear about Python, JavaScript and Go and Rust. Once you select that, you will get that dev container dot JSON file right at your fingertips to add on top of. You could also put in additional things like Linux packages that are system dependencies for maybe some of the R packages you want to use. But once you do that, it actually gets even easier. James shows ways of installing both packages from a GitHub repo as well as from CRAN directly.
