Marcus wrote, quote, say to yourself at the start of the day, I shall meet with meddling, ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious and unsociable people. The inner citadel created through the discipline of ascent and the discipline of desire prepares us for action in a tumultuous world filled with humans who are often irrational, selfish, and cantankerous. Stoics do not retreat from society to achieve equanimity.
