The Psychology of Gaslighting

David Perry: I think it's really important to locate the mechanism of gaslighting in the way that the gaslighter responds to the victims questioning their own reality. We have this relational dimension here, he says. And so these two tactics of side stepping and displacing, I think are really useful because once we see one of those rather than a genuine engagement or reckoning with the victim's reality, that's when we have a case of gaslighting. He concludes by saying Socrates is not a gaslighter because sidestepping and displacing are not tactics he uses.
