Mary sidney herbert was the first woman to publish an english language play. She also published pastoral poetry, which she got away with because she was writing for the queen. Her father was the earl of northumberland, and had been very influential during edward the sixth's reign. His sister ambrosia nursed elizabeth through smallpox, contracting it herself in the process.
