XML Parsing
The bulk of what the application is going to be doing is not parsing this string and passing it around. The end result was that after that optimization the Java version actually ran faster than the C++ version. But I do find it odd that a Parser would choose that strategy because it seems that everything needs to have that information all the way down. It's just generically more useful to be working in the string format and to expect it.
