The sound of revelry in the hall made Grendel mad. It made him kill. And so I think Tolkien is reminding us that, yeah, there is this darkness out there waiting for us. We are going to die. But we can only die with our backs to the wall. Might as well enjoy the sound of harps, the sound of revelries and camaraderie.
