The story we want to tell you in these podcasts spans more than a decade. We're going to start about two thirds of the way through, right when dan and ally landed in sheffield in the spring of 20 17. Dan knew that in time, this lad was where he would grow his idea mente, a group of his own and search for answers to all his most pressing scientific questions. But the reality of day one was quite different. A there was quite a big barrier before going in to lab space and discovering what was there and what he had to work with.
Every year, thousands of scientists struggle to launch their own labs. For three years, a reporting team from Nature documented the lives of married couple Alison Twelvetrees and Daniel Bose as they worked to get their fledgling research groups off the ground.
Frustrations over funding, a global pandemic, and a personal trauma have made this journey anything but simple for Ali and Dan. Listen to their story in Starting up in science.
