Ora's ferocity nearly broke the english morale. They had run over a dozen miles in full armor and weren't fit to fight. The only thing that was keeping them upright at this point was battle rage, a rage so consuming that they didn't even defend themselves. Some of them even began to shug off their coats of mail that they lugged all these miles. And as they did so, the english tore them to pieces. What few norsemen remained alive and able to stand fled the field, limping back to their ships. Only 24 ships made sail, meaning that perhaps as few as 500 of the norse army had survived.
