The Unusual View of Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was an icon for modern dictatorships. He suspended the writ of habeas corpus, and he threw into prison hundreds of thousands of Americans. His great-grandson was imprisoned in Fort McHenry, where the Star-Spangled Banner was flying over when his grandfather Francis Scott Key was a rare prisoner. Lincoln used the term "insurrection" to refer to people who would not do as they were told.
