North america is probably where freemasonry spread the fastest of any of these overseas british domains. There was a bigger population of english speaking people to draw on than there was in india or gibraltar, for instance. So lodges had formed at both boston and philadelphia by about 17 30. And one of them obtained a charter to call itself the provincial grand lodge. After 17 33, we know that lodges proliferated in the port towns up and down the atlantic coast.
