The Fourth Function of Mythology
Professor Campbell identified four central functions in myth. The first function of myth is that of eliciting and supporting a sense of awe before the mystery of being this sense of awe cannot be taught nor enforced through some authority. A quote system of sentiments unquote is conveyed to link one seamlessly and unconsciously to the group's ends. In his discussion of Dante's stages of life professor Campbell mentions the virtues of each life stage including obedience and shame.
