The sad reality is that York probably wasn't granted his freedom. The rumor was that somewhere out there, York lived in a teepee far outside the realm of civilization among his own Native American tribe where he had seven wives. But what we do know about York for sure and his appetites for women is that Lewis and Clark did use him sort of as a prop and as a tool to give over to the Native American tribes. And usually the chiefs would gravitate towards York and want York to sleep with their wives and their women.
