The Importance of Virtue in Roman Religion
Augustine writes that it's better to live a modest life in honesty than a glamorous one made so by vice. He asks his reader to consider the absolutely gigantic number of Roman deities out there. Augustine: It is utterly impossible that the increase and preservation of the Roman Empire could have been due to such gods as these.
