I think it's partly just sheer opportunism in the sense that they're trying to propagandize to people this image of the people that they don't like as the enemy. Having said that, there is a germ of truth in the critique because one of the myths about neoliberalism is that it involves a rollback of the state. I think their problem is really to do with the erosion of their privilege. And when that sort of privilege that people in the middle class have enjoyed for so long and it's bound up with patriarchy and white supremacy are targeted by fascists.
