The Role of Oxybenzones in Reef Safe Products
There are studies that have shown that chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzones might harm marine life, including coral reefs. The term reef safe is one of those marketing terms, that's not regulated at all. So I think they're just trying to be extra, extra cautious. We don't want to bleach or destroy our coral reefs in any way but it seems clear that Maui is over it.
