The Failure of PayPal's Harding Experiment
All PayPal was literally on a single giant database. The only hint I can give you is, after that outage, we migrated out of E15K into Fujitsu. That happened after I left. But there is a hint in there. There was a software, there was an operating system slash hardware problem combined together that caused the outage. And it's not a coincidence that kind of is, in some way, the reason why Vitez was born. In some respect, the fact that the sharding experiment in PayPal failed remained with all of us. We were all motivated because we believed that sharding was the way to go. It was the best way to solve this problem."
