The Pressure to Fit in in the Academic World
There is that pressure to fit in which can change what you do in hidden unseen ways. I actually applied to my PhD program claiming to do a very different project but within a year I basically abandoned it and there was no cost to it right. Jan would sort of joke about how I tricked him after coming into into Princeton but really he he encouraged that that you'd try to explore what what subject really appeals to you. Being at at the place I was did influence it because I started going from doing only Indian history to now taking courses in all kinds of other geographic fields.
Society cannot be designed in a top-down way. Central planning was a historic blunder that harmed India -- even though it was conceived by great men with good intentions.
