The Paternal Function Is a Protective Function
The paternal function is to step in and say no, nobody gets that. Lacan says it marks the emergence of a symbolic lack of an imaginary object. It's into that lack that the child can move with their own desire. This little subtracted phi is precisely what's going to give you the lack needed to activate your own desire.
