The Dramatic Context of Plato's Republic
The dialogue takes place in the pariahs which is the port of Athens. It's a symbol of Athenian imperial power and it might have other connotations as well. The 30 who ruled in Athens during that oligarchic regime were divided into the 20 in Athens and the 10 in pariahs. Their rule does not last long they're overthrown in less than a year by democratic forces.
