Doctor in the English Language

The word doctor comes from two apparent sources, both of which are alive in the modern use of the word. By the eleventh century, ecclesiastic universities would bestow the title doctor. The second definition is often overlooked and is kind of old fashioned and quaint these days. But it might even be older than the ecclesiastic title, and that is doctor, meaning a learned or a wise person.
