The Mechanistic Account of Metabolism
Theory of metabolism is not reducible to local motion on the interior of an object, it has to do something else. Descartes recognizes that there are gaps in what he can account mechanistically but that doesn't lead him to abandon mechanisticism. He explicitly says that he can't really understand fully what's going on in reproduction and growth.
