George Lucas had always intended for the workies to overthrow the Empire. He wanted that juxtaposition of a primitive society taking down the most technically advanced war machine. Wookiees, despite an affinity or connection to the force, very few were ever Jedi. There was an ancient old Republic droid on board the ship when they're building their sabers. It's voiced by David Tennant from Dr. Who.
