The Irish potato famine led to hundreds of thousands of people dying of starvation in Ireland. And they were sadly neglected by some of the people in England who owned the land. Terrible, really, but a lot of them left. They had to leave their homes and find living somewhere else. That's why there are so many Irish communities on the East Coast.
