The Differences Between the Bristol Fragment and Other Tales of Merlin
There are numerous versions of this story of the relationship between Merlin and Vivian. In our fragment, it combines various variations that seem to tone down the sexual implications. We don't know why. It could just be that this is the text as it appeared in the exam class from which this was copied. But it's a good example of the sort of minor changes you get in manuscripts all the time. Sometimes they don't make any impact on the text at all. In this case, just changing a few words actually makes a bit of a change to the tone of the story.
