CHAPTER

The Border Between Hong Kong and Shenzhen

Hong Kong is comprised of three parts, Hong Kong Island, a siege to the British at the end of the Opium War, this 1842. The area directly across the Kaloon Peninsula is the second part and then the third part is the largest area at the new territories. So in Hong Kong it's typical to talk about two big waves of refugee movement. One of them was in the years leading up to 1962 - around the time of China's Great Famine. This border area of Balan County is a place where refugees come from and a place where Refugees pass through.
