There is also some sort of pre christian connection, specifically to mistletoe. The story of saint boniface and his tree might be our earliest sort of christmas tree story. In old norse sagas, mistletoe comes up lots, in lots in the pre modern period. It shows up in medicine. But we do know that these are things that had been going on well before europe christianized.
