How to Control LDL Receptor Activity in the Liver

The LDL receptor has basically four things controlling it. Number one, the amount of free cholesterol in this cell. If the liver perceives its own pool of cholesterol as too small, it increases the expression of the LDL receptor to bring in cholesterol from the blood because it needs it. Most therapeutic interventions that have been put forth target this aspect of controlling LDL receptor activity.
