The Chukchi killed their reindeer, or killed themselves, rather than be part of the new promised land. Around and after the violence, Soviet scientists mapped these hills and rivers. One reindeer scientist wrote in the 1950s that the revolution had brought such new forms of organizing the reindeer herd that growth would even be infinite. In this story, our species has no kin but ourselves.
