How Can Protestant Clergy Eliminate Common Spells?

In the 16 forties, a protestant clergyman instructed a farmer that he should not use a particular spell to quell fires. The man immediately got his family bible and demanded that the pastor show him where in god's revealed word such spells were explicitly forbidden. Here we see a wonderful example of if protestantism could not fully eliminate common spells and charms, it certainly could transform the way in which people viewed and justified these rits.
