Debate is one answer to a broader question, which is how do we disagree better? Do you know Mercier and Spurbur's argumentative theory of reason? Yes, I do. They argue that the purpose of reasoning is actually to persuade not to think. And so my takeaway from that work was we can make people smarter at reasoning if they have an argument where the goal is to find the truth, not to convince. There are a bunch of different ways to shift that.
