Paul Waldman: I was a vaguely unengaged Clinton supporter like not strongly pro Clinton or pro-democrat but sort of defaulted to that while not really thinking about politics very much. When it came time to leave the academics he hadn't gotten a job and wanted to try to make it in journalism. He became a kind of a neo-conservative writer and ended up at first things and then that didn't work out.
