The Donatist Controversy in North Africa
The Donatists were a sectarian group in North Africa. They appealed to kind of the rebellious spirit, you might say, of African sensibilities. Augustine spent 35 years responding to the Donatists through public debates and writings. He attempted to convince them of Catholic claims of necessity of the universal church.
