So called conspiracy theory has been viewed kind of in relation to the political spectrum as going from a largely left wing phenomenon historically to now something that is associated almost wholesale with right wing. I think this explains a lot of the shift in academic perspectives about these things where we're if there is a general suspicion of pop culture it's because it doesn't go far enough in promoting social trends, says Julian Zelizer.
