The tales of famine started to leak out of China, but people didn't really understand the scale of it until many, many years later. Estimates of the death from this time related to the famine range from on the small end around 20 million to 50 to 60 million. The Chinese Communist Party would blame the entirety of the crisis on two things: First, whether it would become a big scapegoat for them. And second thing is they would blame agents of the Kuomintang and also the Soviet Union for sabotaging them.
The Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China was an economic and social campaign led by the Chinese Communist Party from 1958 to 1962. CCP Chairman Mao Zedong launched the campaign to reconstruct the country from an agrarian economy into a communist society through the formation of people's communes. Instead it would result in the death of millions.
