In days when healthcare, which is not a thing, like even as far back as the dark ages and the medieval times, life expectancy was very short. The Peruvian demographic explosion of the 50s to 70s was in part because of this. You need at least a couple of generations before you change the practices of the people. So from the 40s to the 60s, agrarian families with a lot of kids who made it to adulthood was a thing.
