The Rise and Fall of Free to Play Games
Some big free to play companies get between 60 to 80% of their revenue from a very small group of what are now called VIPs who will spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on your free to play game in a year. The demographic that most free to play games are going after is what used to be called whales. So yeah, these games rose to popularity because Apple and Google didn't do a really good job of curating their app stores for anything other than profitability.
