Introduction
On November 3rd, 2020, I became significantly more optimistic about the state of democracy in the United States and perhaps around the world than I had been over the last few years. For about 10 years, we have seen very rapid rise of authoritarian populists around the world. Joe Biden's election was the first grand victory in the longstanding battle between democratic and authoritarian populist forces. Over the course of last year 73 countries experienced declines in their democracy score moved away from democracy only 28 moved towards it. In the world as a whole less than one in five people now live in a country classified as fully free.
