The Origins of Childhood

The root of the legal concept of personhood in the United States actually comes out of an era when there was legal slavery. Children emerge as a distinct category under the law, and part of what happens is we create this legal category of children where they're quasi property. That is to say, they somewhat belong to their parents who are going to be in charge of them.
