The Importance of Income Taxes in Inflation
The Trapwood index also includes sales and income taxes. Taxes are clearly a cost of living, but do you in any sense consume income taxes? Of course not, right? If you consume zero this year, but you made a lot of money, then guess what? You pay income taxes. It has nothing to do with your consumption. So they don't really belong in an inflation index.
