The History of China
The new exams that they have in their system are based on the history of China and information on foreign countries. The exam always used to have a thing called an eight-legged essay. Zhang Zhidong also encourages Chinese to go abroad for study. By 1909, China has 100,000 modern schools, although quality is of course uneven.
