There are some people to argue we didn't need to fight the civil war. It would have fallen into economic disuse, they say. And i find a any kind of counterfactual arguments like this just endlessly fascinating. But what i find very easy to imagine persisting is what actually does persist: gim crotype situations where you got share cropping in all these other ways of having really slavery by another name.
